Semantic processing in psychopathic offenders

چکیده
Clinical observation (Cleckley, 1976) and experimental research (Hare, 1998) suggest psychopaths have difficulty processing the semantic aspects of stimuli, especially in situations requiring significant semantic processing (Hare & Jutai, 1988). Interpreting this semantic deficit as a problem processing a word s secondary connotations, we predicted that the performance of psychopathic individuals would be (1) less facilitated by the congruent connotations and (2) less disrupted by the incongruent connotations of secondary linguistic stimuli. To test this hypothesis, we administered two tasks to Caucasian male inmates from Wisconsin correctional facilities—a semantic priming task and a semantic Stroop task. Contrary to expectation, all participants demonstrated semantic priming regardless of psychopathy status, level of anxiety, or the time between primes and targets. Psychopathic individuals also showed comparable interference to controls on incongruent semantic Stroop trials. 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Theta phase coherence in affective picture processing reveals dysfunctional sensory integration in psychopathic offenders.
Psychopathic offenders are described as emotionally cold, displaying deficits in affective responding. However, research demonstrates that many of the psychopathy-related deficits are moderated by attention, such that under conditions of high attentional and perceptual load psychopathic offenders display deficits in affective responses, but do not in conditions of low load. To date, most studie...
متن کاملRecognition of facial affect in psychopathic offenders.
The authors examined the reliability of facial affect processing deficits found in psychopathic individuals (R. Blair et al., 2004) and whether they could be modified by attentional set. One hundred eleven offenders, classified using the Psychopathy Checklist--Revised (R. Hare, 2003) and Welsh Anxiety Scale (G. Welsh, 1956), performed a facial affect recognition task under 2 conditions. On the ...
متن کاملOffenders with antisocial personality disorder show attentional bias for violence-related stimuli.
Offenders with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) may be characterized by a lack in emotional functioning that manifests in irritability and a lack of remorse. The proposed link between ASPD and negative emotionality led to the question of emotional processing anomalies in ASPD. Furthermore, the effect of childhood maltreatment/abuse on emotional processing was tested in the present study. ...
متن کاملExamining the influence of psychopathy, hostility biases, and automatic processing on criminal offenders' Theory of Mind.
Theory of Mind (ToM) is a social perceptual skill that refers to the ability to take someone else's perspective and infer what others think. The current study examined the effect of potential hostility biases, as well as controlled (slow) versus automatic (fast) processing on ToM performance in psychopathy. ToM abilities (as assessed with the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test; RMET; Baron-Cohen...
متن کاملReduced susceptibility to the attentional blink in psychopathic offenders: implications for the attention bottleneck hypothesis.
OBJECTIVE Newman and Baskin-Sommers (in press) have proposed that psychopathy reflects an attention bottleneck that interferes with processing contextual information, including the timely processing of affective and inhibitory cues that initiate self-regulation. Despite a wealth of evidence that attention moderates the affective, inhibitory, and self-regulation deficits of psychopathic offender...
